Located on Erlanger Road, one of the most prominent streets in the Telegraph Hill conservation area, this project beautifully balances modern design with the heritage of Victorian architecture. Our team secured planning permission for a side and rear ground floor extension featuring charred timber cladding, alongside a striking full-width zinc-clad dormer at the rear of the main roof slope.
Erlanger Road is renowned for its stunning Victorian homes and scenic park views. This conservation area is one of the most complete Victorian settings in London, with planning rules that protect the area’s historic charm while allowing for modern additions at the rear. These new elements are designed to be distinct from the original architecture, making the evolution of the home’s history clear.
Our extension embraces this approach with a modern design that maximizes glazing along the side return, bringing much-needed natural light into the previously dark central areas of the house. The north-facing glazing minimizes solar gain, enhancing comfort without sacrificing light. The charred timber cladding creates a striking contrast with the original London stock brick, adding a bold, contemporary aesthetic. The stepped rear façade subtly reflects changes in roof orientation and the different internal functions of the new spaces.
This project reflects our commitment to creating light-filled, contemporary spaces that respect and celebrate the historic character of their surroundings.
